There were lost car keys, falls in the mud and a few grazes from an overgrown holly bush… but we did it! On Thursday 24th October we completed our Big Wild Walk.

The 90-mile Eric Thurston Wildlife Way runs from Hoylake, on the Wirral coast, all the way up to Shining Tor in the Peak District. Over the course of the day, teams of staff and trustees walked sections and complete the full route, from shore to tor. Along the way we passed 13 of our nature reserves, home to everything from natterjack toads and curlew, to beavers and barn owls!

They were packed with beautiful autumnal colour, bird song, wildlife and fabulous fungi. Although it was wet under foot and very windy, we were incredibly lucky with the weather. All of our walkers enjoyed blue skies and gorgeous views.

Thank you so much to those who have donated and helped us reach our target!

Can you help us raise even more to protect local wildlife? Any sponsorship amount, no matter the size, will make a massive difference to nature on your doorstep and the wild spaces we passed on our walk.

Why did we do it? Nature in the UK is broken. We are one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. For wildlife to truly begin to recover we need to make space for it – at least 30% of the land and sea across the UK must be protected, connected and managed for nature by 2030.

Our Big Wild Walk supports our mission to restore and protect at least 30% of land and sea for nature in Cheshire by 2030. All the money raised will go towards protecting nature, wildlife and wild spaces across Cheshire, Halton, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Warrington and Wirral.

As members of 'Team CWT', we certainly all love nature and the outdoors. However, we range from hardened hikers to fair-weather walkers! 40 members of staff and trustees took on our 90-mile Big Wild Walk to raise much needed funds for nature's recovery. We want to show what can be done by making your hobby work for wildlife!

Jo Big Wild Walk

Jo Darlington, Director of Fundraising and Engagement

"I'm really looking forward to taking a break from the laptop and enjoying a few hours outdoors. I'm hoping it will be dry as I’m definitely a fair weather walker! Any support you can give will be a huge boost."

Kyle Big Wild Walk

Kyle Mellish, Senior Ecologist

"I'm doing this because I love a good walk, and as I'm not originally from Cheshire, am keen to explore parts of it that I haven't seen before. The walk highlights the range of habitats Cheshire has to offer, and the work we have to do in making these bigger, better, and more joined up. Your sponsorship will help us do even more!"

Mélusine Big Wild Walk

Mélusine Velde, Planning and Advocacy Officer

"I'm excited to join the Big Wild Walk as a great way to get outdoors, explore parts of Cheshire I haven't been to, spend some time with my wonderful colleagues, and share the cool things we see along the way! Why not do your own Big Wild Walk this October and explore new parts of Cheshire?"

Kat big wild walk

Kat Wade, Senior Mobilisation Officer

"I'm a keen walker and I've done a few big walks for charity in the past but I'm really excited about this one. I get to team up with my colleagues and show off all the amazing nature we have on our doorstep! We want to show people how fun it can be to turn your hobby into donations to help a great cause."

Becky W Big Wild Walk

Becky Williams, Wilder Communities Officer

"What better way to raise funds for wildlife protection than by stepping outside, breathing in the fresh air, and appreciating the beauty of nature around us!"

Carys big wild walk

Carys McMillan, Our Dee Estuary Assistant

"I'm looking forward to the Big Wild Walk as there's nothing better than being outside, moving your body and connecting your mind to nature and your surroundings instead of the hustle and bustle of every day life. Personally, I enjoy physically experiencing the different sensations the chaotic UK weather brings. I also love being by the coast, I've never not lived by the coastline and a sea breeze is enough to make most days feel instantly better! Get outside and feel the benefits of nature with your own Big Wild Walk this autumn."

Graham big wild walk

Graham Borden-Long, Living Landscape Officer

“I love being outdoors and spending time exploring some of the UK’s wild spaces. The Big Wild Walk is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and help our wild things and places by doing something I love. Can you support us and help us reach our target?”

Fraser big wild walk

Fraser MacDonald Oulds, Wilder Engagement Programme Manager

"I'm excited to be taking part in the Big Wild Walk to raise awareness about the fantastic work communities in the Wild Network are doing to bring back wildlife and help nature recover in urban areas. Nature doesn't just belong in nature reserves!

As a child, family walks were one of the ways I learnt to love nature and it now helps me feel more connected to where I live. Join in by sharing your own wild walk or supporting our fundraiser."

Natalie Webb, Senior Living Landscape Officer

"I’m very fortunate to spend a lot of time working outdoors, but often by myself or with other members of my team. So, i’m really looking forward to spending a day walking with other people from within the trust that I generally don’t see day to day. Can you sponsor us and help us do even more for nature in Cheshire?"

Andy Stubbs, Wilder Communities Officer

"I'm looking forward to the Big Wild Walk this year as it's going to be a step above, with everyone coming together to walk a massive distance, it'll be quite a feat! Your sponsorship will be great motivation to get us through the miles!".

Emily Lake, Senior Project Officer, Our Dee Estuary

“I am passionate about the Cheshire coastline and every time I walk it, I see something different. At this time of year it is the arrival of the autumn and winter wading birds, which will number up to 150,000 in the peak of winter. I am excited to walk on the coast with added purpose this October in support of Cheshire’s Big Wild Walk. Why not plan your own Big Wild Walk and see what wildlife you'll spot?”

I am absolutely delighted that Cheshire Wildlife Trust has chosen to walk the Eric Thurston Wildlife Way as a fundraiser this year and encourage everyone who reads this to sponsor the walk to help them reach their target!
John Thurston
creator of the Eric Thurston Wildlife Way

More words from John Thurston

“A few years ago, I walked the Macmillan Cross-Britain Way and it inspired me to develop a long-distance walk to raise money for wildlife.

I've always had a soft spot for Cheshire. I spent my formative years here, so I remember it from those early days. My father, Eric, after whom the walk is named, was chair of the Mid-Cheshire branch of the Cheshire Wildlife Trust from its creation for over 35 years. He was a keen naturalist an early advocate of the concept of ‘wildlife corridors’ to provide a route for wildlife to migrate between nature reserves. This walk is in keeping with his commitment to Cheshire Wildlife Trust and their work.

The walk starts in Hoylake and goes to Shining Tor, so it shows the two extremes of the West and East points of Cheshire. You pass through lots of interesting places along the way which are great for wildlife. There are some terrific viewpoints. We’ve just passed one today at Thurstaston Common but there are plenty others such as Old Pale in Delamere and Shining Tor itself. You also pass some superb nature reserves, like Swettenham. But there’s also whole raft of stuff that is so small, that you don’t see it. But there’s also a whole raft of stuff that is so small, that you don’t see it. But it’s there, and it’s important. That’s part of life, isn’t it? As people, we’re an aspect of it, but people alone aren't life, aren’t a planet. We need nature.

I am absolutely delighted that Cheshire Wildlife Trust has chosen to walk the Eric Thurston Wildlife Way as a fundraiser this year. I encourage everyone who reads this to sponsor the walk to help them reach their target!"

What will my donation support?

The funds raised will support wildlife recovery and contribute to our mission to protect 30% of the UK’s land and sea for nature by 2030.

Nature in the UK is broken. We are one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

For wildlife to truly begin to recover we need to make space for it – at least 30% of the land and sea across the UK must be protected, connected and managed for nature by 2030. This target is what we’re calling 30 by 30. In Cheshire 30% would be approximately 90,000ha of land. Currently only 5% of land in our region is looked after in this way so there is still a way to go.
